ABOUT THE PROJECT

Learning Through Improvisation for Inclusive Education

The Training Programme is one of the core educational activities of the Erasmus+ project Performing Bridges: Improvisation for Inclusive Education and Social Change. It introduces educators, youth workers, artists and social professionals to practical improvisation methods that can be applied in adult education, community work and inclusive learning environments.

The programme explores how improvisation can become a powerful educational approach that strengthens communication, collaboration, creativity and confidence while creating psychologically safe spaces for learning and participation.

Why Improvisation?

Across Europe, many adults face barriers that traditional educational approaches do not always address effectively. Migrants, refugees and adults with fewer opportunities often experience language barriers, low confidence or social isolation that make participation in learning more difficult.

Improvisation offers an accessible and highly participatory way of learning. Rather than focusing on performance, it encourages active listening, collaboration, experimentation and creative problem-solving, allowing participants to learn through experience and interaction.

What You’ll Learn

The programme combines practical exercises, reflection and collaborative activities that participants can immediately adapt to their own educational practice.

During the training participants will explore how to:

  • build trust and psychological safety within groups;
  • improve communication and active listening;
  • create safe and inclusive learning environments;
  • strengthen emotional awareness and self-regulation;
  • encourage cooperation and constructive group dynamics;
  • develop resilience and adaptive skills through creative practice;
  • use improvisation as a practical educational methodology.

Who Is It For?

The programme is designed for professionals working with adults in formal and non-formal education, including:

  • teachers and adult educators;
  • youth workers;
  • psychologists and social workers;
  • artists interested in educational practice;
  • facilitators working with migrants, refugees and diverse communities.

No previous experience in improvisation is required.

Learning by Doing

The Training Programme is based on experiential learning. Rather than focusing on theory alone, participants learn through practical exercises, collaborative activities and guided reflection.

The methodology combines principles of embodied learning, psychological safety and co-creation, demonstrating how improvisation can support both personal development and social inclusion. Participants are encouraged to experiment, reflect and adapt the exercises to their own educational and professional contexts.

Part of the Performing Bridges Project

The Training Programme is one of the three main components of the Performing Bridges project, alongside the Total Improv Festival and the Performing Bridges Toolkit.

Together, these activities create a complete educational pathway that combines artistic practice, professional development and freely accessible learning resources, helping educators integrate improvisation into inclusive teaching and community work.
